Ein fröhliches Halleluja

J. S. Bach achieved astonishing emotional depth time after time in his music, especially in the passions and in his over 200 surviving church cantatas, dictated by biblical texts, free verse or Lutheran chorales. An early example from Bach’s time in Weimar is the poignant cantata _Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis_ BWV 21. By contrast, in the cantata _Geist und Seele wird verwirret_ BWV35, first performed in Leipzig in 1726, God is praised with dizzying virtuosity by a solo alto and organ.
