Only sixteen years after the famous overture Ein Sommernachtstraum, Mendelssohn composed the complete stage music for this 17th-century romantic comedy about a magical flower, an amateur theatre company, four complicated love lives, fairies in a moonlit forest and a man with a donkey’s head. Mendelssohn’s stage music, like Shakespeare’s undisputed masterpiece, still stands like a house centuries later. Philippe Herreweghe and theatre company de Roovers seal this successful marriage between music and theatre with a magical theatre concert.
