Reformation

There would be no Bach without Luther! Johann Sebastian Bach was born in Eisenach, the very same town where the great religious reformer Martin Luther had studied Latin 200 years before. Steeped in Luther’s ideas from childhood, Bach worked them into his music, most eloquently in the many chorales in his cantatas. This programme celebrates 500 years of Lutheranism, combining the moving Easter cantata _Christ lag in Todesbanden_ (or the Lutheran Missa brevis BWV 234) with one of Bach’s most famous cantatas, _Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott_, described as the ‘Marseillaise of the Reformation’.
