Missa solemnis

Although Franz Schubert died at just 31, he wrote nearly 1000 works including his immortal songs, piano sonatas and string quartets. He also wrote quite a lot of religious music, and doing so increased his understanding of symphonic forms. The monumental Sixt Mass (Missa solemnis) from 1828 is ‘triumph and swan song at once’. Full of references to Bach, Haydn and Mozart, this brilliant concert mass is really a homage to Schubert’s great hero Beethoven, who he had helped to bury the year before.
