Missa solemnis

Although Franz Schubert died at just 31, he wrote nearly 1000 works including his immortal songs, piano sonatas and string quartets. He also wrote quite a lot of religious music, and doing so increased his understanding of symphonic forms. The monumental _Mass no. 6_ (Missa solemnis) from 1828 is ‘triumph and swan song at once’. Full of references to Bach, Haydn and Mozart, this brilliant concert mass is really a homage to Schubert’s great hero Beethoven, who he had helped to bury the year before.
