In 1899, Wilhelm Mengelberg started the Palm Sunday tradition of performing Johann Sebastian Bach’s (1685-1750) _St. Matthew Passion_ in Amsterdam with the (then new) Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. He conducted this annual rite for nearly a half century, his status as a conductor taking on almost religious proportions. Since 2009 there have been alternating performances of either the St. Matthew or St. John Passion, or modern passion music, as the solemn upbeat to Easter. After exactly 10 years away, Philippe Herreweghe and Collegium Vocale Gent will return to the Concertgebouw to continue this tradition with its world famous orchestra!
