In die nativitatis

As Leipzig’s new cantor and music director, Johann Sebastian Bach threw himself energetically into composing an endless stream of cantatas. Christmas was of course the time of year to pull out all the musical stops. _In die nativitatis_ transports you to the Thomaskirche at Christmastime in 1723 and 1724. Long before his famous Christmas Oratorio, Bach announced the coming of the Messiah in several of his most richly orchestrated and festive vocal works, such as the grand cantata BWV 63 _Christen ätzet diesen Tag_ for soloists, choir, strings, continuo, 3 oboes, 4 trumpets and tympani!
