The vast majority of Johann Sebastian Bach’s preserved cantatas were written for specific Sundays or feast days within the liturgy. A number of the occasional works he also wrote, however, are among his best known. On 17 October 1727 the moving cantata Lass, Fürstin, lass noch ein strahl was performed for the memorial service of Christiane Eberhardine, the beloved queen of Poland.
