One look at Mozart’s busy schedule from February 1785 shows why he was unable to write a new work for the Viennese Tonkünstler-Societät’s benefit concert. Instead, he reworked his Great Mass in C minor to create the Italian Lenten cantata _Davidde penitente_. In this way he not only saved time, he also created a unique opportunity to allow music he’d written in Salzburg in 1782 to be heard in Vienna! He added two brilliant new arias for the star singers Adamberger and Cavalieri. But the leading role in this seldom-performed contrafactum is still for the choir!
