Ode for the Birthday of Queen Anne, HWV 74
Alceste, HWV 45
An exceptional evening of Händel with two contrasting gems. Ode for the Birthday of Queen Anne (HWV 74) is a festive hymn of praise, full of grandeur and gratitude. But it is above all Alceste (HWV 45) that makes this program unique: a rarely performed dramatic work, written as incidental music for a lost tragedy. Here, Händel reveals himself at his most theatrical and experimental, with colorful orchestration and vividly characterized pieces. For the first time, the soloists, choir, and orchestra of Collegium Vocale Gent perform under the direction of conductor Sébastien Daucé, who approaches this unfamiliar jewel with flair.
